chosen to be featured on the cover of the winter 2020 edition of climbing magazine, cannon cliff is a first ascent by a team of three climbers that included aaron kristiansen and jordan cargill. the route is an interesting variation on a popular trad line, which features some of the most prominent cracks in the sea to sky.
on the third pitch, get on the first bolt with a 100 foot wall to climb. the next pitch features a couple of awkward moves and then a walkoff to the anchors. kristiansen called it "alright but not a favorite." the fourth pitch is a roofed finger crack with a scary free fall to the anchors.
take the gully just left of the cave move to a wide ledge with two roofs, which leads to the ladder. follow the ledge to the left and take the small gully to the right. one pitch of 5.7 crack climbing leads to the cave move, which is the crux of the climb. after the cave move, the crack climbs a short, steep section with very little gear. at this point, the crack climbs over a roof and then makes a long traverse to a narrow crack which goes left, then right, then right again. the crack goes to the left where it ends up in a very large cave. from the cave the crack climbs steep slabs to another roof. after the roof, the crack is very easy, but does have a couple of nasty moves. the route continues to the right and finishes with a runout slab to the top of the wall.
on the day i climbed this route, the main climbing was on the overhanging crack right of the cave move. it climbed steeply up the rock and over the cave, then traversed right and climbed to the top of the wall. the crack does not have any particular features to recommend it and is best placed on top of the wall. after the crack climb to the cave move, the next two pitches are the crux. the first pitch has a couple of moves after the cave, the second pitch consists of easy climbing on nice slabs with one or two low-angle sections. the third pitch goes through a chimney and climbs over the roof to the top of the wall. after the chimney, the climb is on slabs with easy climbing and then continues to the top of the wall. 3d9ccd7d82
